LECTURE
Visual Analysis
Visual analysis is a way to understand a design or work of art, which understands the idea of the creator or the hidden meaning of the work of art. Visual analysis also allows people to intuitively understand the content and metaphor of the work from the perspective of different design principles.
- OBSERVATION
Observation represents the direct identification of design elements and methods through vision.
- ANALYSIS
Analysis is the result of thinking about observations and reporting and summarizing the information observed.
- INTERPRETATION
The last part is to confirm the observation, analysis and conclusion of the work by looking for other similar works.

TASK 2
Visual analysis
Year:1495-1458
Size:460 cm × 880 cm(181 in × 346 in)
Observe
The Last Supper depicts the scene in the New Testament where Jesus eats the last meal with the twelve disciples, and tells the key moment when Jesus predicts that he will be betrayed. In the picture, Jesus is located in the center, forming a stable triangular structure, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The meeting point of the perspective line is the head of Jesus, emphasizing that he is the visual core of the painting. The light effect accentuates the image of Jesus while placing Judas in shadow, symbolizing the contrast between good and evil.
Analyze
Perspective method
The vanishing point of the entire painting is located on the head of Jesus, where all the perspective lines (such as the beams of the walls and ceiling) converge, making Jesus the visual focus. The use of perspective enhances the depth of the picture, making it look like a real space rather than a mere fresco.
Golden ratio and composition
The body of Jesus forms a stable equilateral triangle, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The twelve disciples are divided into four groups of three to give the picture a sense of rhythm and structure. The layout of the entire painting follows the golden ratio, which makes the visual effect more harmonious.
Compare
Jesus' head is framed by the light from behind the window, like a holy light, highlighting his divine image. Judas is hidden in the shadows, symbolizing his betrayal. The faces of the other disciples are bathed in light, creating a stark contrast between good and evil.
Interpretation
The Last Supper is not only a depiction of a religious scene, but also a work full of emotional tension. In terms of character dynamics, each disciple's posture, gesture, and expression are different, showing their shock, confusion, and grief at Jesus' prophecy. (Symbolism) Jesus sits firmly in the center, symbolizing his authority as Savior, while Judas bends his head away from the crowd, holding a purse full of silver coins, suggesting his betrayal. (Religion and Humanity) The picture not only shows the sacredness, but also highlights the human emotion and drama, so that the viewer can feel the conflict between faith and humanity.
Sketch
Description 1: Prominent representation of Messiah Jesus Christ
In this work, Jesus Christ is placed in the center of the picture, becoming the visual focus. The painter used linear perspective, and all perspective lines converged on Jesus' head, so that the viewer's eyes naturally focused on him. Jesus' figure is an equilateral triangle, symbolizing stability and harmony. His open hands and calm expression, in sharp contrast to the excited reactions of the disciples around him, further emphasize his holiness and calmness.

Description 2: The relationship between the Messiah and the traitor Judas
In this work depicting the Messiah and the traitor Judas, the painter cleverly placed Judas in the third position on the right hand side of Jesus. Judas' face is partially covered by shadows, symbolizing his inner darkness. He holds a small purse in his hand, suggesting his act of betraying Jesus for thirty silver coins. At the same time, he knocked over the salt shaker, which is traditionally regarded as an ominous omen. These details reveal Judas's betrayal identity through symbolic techniques.

Description 3: Jesus is surrounded by believers, hinting at the traitor on the left
In this work, Jesus is surrounded by twelve disciples. The disciples are divided into four groups, each with three people, and they interact with each other through gestures and expressions, showing their different reactions after hearing Jesus' prophecy about the betrayer. The painter uses light and composition to put Judas, the third disciple on the left, in the shadow, hinting at his betrayal. This layout not only enriches the layering of the picture, but also cleverly conveys the inner qualities of the characters through the contrast of light and shadow.

FEEDBACK
Week 4 General:
The design principles are understood and applied in depth and can be naturally integrated into the work. The details still need to be further refined. The design is clear and concise, but the visual structure needs to be further strengthened in the complex information hierarchy. The brand consistency is good, but the creative expression is still slightly conservative. It is recommended to try more unique designs.
Week 4 Specific:
1. Color usage: The color matching is appropriate, but the contrast is sometimes insufficient. It is recommended to try a high-contrast combination to enhance the sense of hierarchy.
2. Typesetting and font selection: The typesetting is concise, and the font selection needs to explore more contrast and personalized combinations.
3. Image and illustration usage: The image style is good, but sometimes it does not fully fit the overall design, and the style consistency needs to be maintained.
Week 5 General:
The application of design principles is more mature, the information is more clearly conveyed, and there is still room for improvement, especially the balance and contrast of details. The information presentation is clearer, but in complex designs, the layout needs to be simplified to avoid visual fatigue. The creative breakthrough is obvious, and the consistency is maintained. It is recommended to continue to explore new design ideas and enhance uniqueness.
Week 5 Specific:
1. Color application: bold color matching and strong contrast can effectively enhance visual impact.
2. Layout and font selection: font contrast and layering are improved. Some designs use more complex fonts to simplify key information.
3. Image and illustration integration: image style and design are coordinated, and image matching and position are optimized to improve visual fluency.
4. Interface design and interactive experience: there is progress in interactive details, but micro-interaction design still needs to be improved to improve experience fluency.
5. Information architecture optimization: the information structure is clear, and navigation and hierarchy in long pages and complex designs still need to be optimized.
REFLECTION
Experience
In this assignment, I learned the method of visual analysis and applied the knowledge of design principles to the analysis of a piece of art. In the process, I was very troubled about how to improve the artwork in the end, always applying an invisible filter to the works I chose and not daring to show it. However, after some careful consideration, I took a step forward. In the process of the assignment, I found it to be a very interesting process, and through step-by-step thinking, I continued to create happily.
Observation
In this assignment, I noticed that most works used multiple design principles, but they often had primary and secondary differences. When improving the works, I learned how to use several design principles to set off the most important design principles, thereby enhancing the overall effect of the work.
