TASK 3
Visual analysis
Year:1495-1458
Size:460 cm × 880 cm(181 in × 346 in)
Observe
The Last Supper depicts the scene in the New Testament where Jesus eats the last meal with the twelve disciples, and tells the key moment when Jesus predicts that he will be betrayed. In the picture, Jesus is located in the center, forming a stable triangular structure, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The meeting point of the perspective line is the head of Jesus, emphasizing that he is the visual core of the painting. The light effect accentuates the image of Jesus while placing Judas in shadow, symbolizing the contrast between good and evil.
Analyze
Perspective method
The vanishing point of the entire painting is located on the head of Jesus, where all the perspective lines (such as the beams of the walls and ceiling) converge, making Jesus the visual focus. The use of perspective enhances the depth of the picture, making it look like a real space rather than a mere fresco.
Golden ratio and composition
The body of Jesus forms a stable equilateral triangle, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The twelve disciples are divided into four groups of three to give the picture a sense of rhythm and structure. The layout of the entire painting follows the golden ratio, which makes the visual effect more harmonious.
Compare
Jesus' head is framed by the light from behind the window, like a holy light, highlighting his divine image. Judas is hidden in the shadows, symbolizing his betrayal. The faces of the other disciples are bathed in light, creating a stark contrast between good and evil.
Interpretation
The Last Supper is not only a depiction of a religious scene, but also a work full of emotional tension. In terms of character dynamics, each disciple's posture, gesture, and expression are different, showing their shock, confusion, and grief at Jesus' prophecy. (Symbolism) Jesus sits firmly in the center, symbolizing his authority as Savior, while Judas bends his head away from the crowd, holding a purse full of silver coins, suggesting his betrayal. (Religion and Humanity) The picture not only shows the sacredness, but also highlights the human emotion and drama, so that the viewer can feel the conflict between faith and humanity.
Task 3
Finel Sketch
Figure1.3: Finel Sketch
Sketch idea
Jesus knew that he had been betrayed. But he did not point out who did it directly but looked at his disciples quietly. They explained nervously one by one, fearing that they would be misunderstood, and competed to prove their loyalty. Seeing their anxiety and uneasiness, Jesus felt a little relieved in his heart - at least, they cared about him and the friendship between master and disciple.
But among this group of people, Judas looked particularly glaring. He pretended to be serious on the surface, and even showed a caring expression, as if he was no different from others. Jesus looked at him, feeling indescribably sad. He had known for a long time that he could not escape this disaster. Arrest, trial, and suffering were all doomed. But what chilled him the most was not his own fate, but Judas' choice - the disciple who had eaten with him and listened to his sermons would actually send him out in this way.
Jesus knew that it was useless to say anything at this time. Things had come to this point, and no one could stop it. He did not want to accuse loudly, and he did not want to make everyone more uneasy. He just looked at them silently, his eyes moving from one person to another. His heart was complicated, with sadness, forgiveness, and helplessness, all intertwined. He understood that all this was part of fate and that he had to take this path. But he couldn't help but wonder, if everything could be done again, would Judas regret it? Would he make a different choice?
Unfortunately, there are no ifs in life. Jesus sighed softly and took a last look at his disciples. Their eyes were full of confusion, fear, and guilt, and he just looked at them gently, trying to remember this last moment. His ending was already doomed, and their future would be completely changed after this night.
FEEDBACK
Week 6 General:
The redesigned work retains the religious and historical connotations of the original work and injects modern design concepts, forming a unique visual language that coexists with tradition and modernity. The overall picture not only maintains a solemn atmosphere but also inspires new thinking of the viewer through contemporary elements.
Week 6 Specific:
The design shows a strong emotional transmission in the delicate expression of the characters' facial expressions, gestures, and symbolic elements (such as halos and color gradients). However, some details can still be further refined to make the inner emotions of each character more vivid and personalized.
Week 7 General:
The composition of the work is clear and well-structured, and the relationship between the characters and the background is properly handled, which not only highlights the central position of Jesus in the picture, but also reasonably arranges the positions of other characters. The spatial distribution and the use of light and shadow make the whole picture balanced and rhythmic.
Week 7 Specific:
The work uses contrasting colors to give the picture a modern feel without losing the sacred atmosphere. However, in some areas, the jump in color is a bit abrupt. It is recommended to make moderate transition adjustments in some local areas to make the fusion of traditional and modern elements more natural and harmonious.
REFLECTION
Experience
In the process of redesigning "The Last Supper of Jesus Christ", I went through a complete creative process from initial conception to continuous modification and experimentation of various design schemes. This stage not only made me feel the excitement of inspiration collision but also made me realize the importance of continuous trial and error and adjustment in practice. Every step is pushing me to constantly break through myself. Observation In this task, I found that the use of color, such as light and shadow, can be used as a way to convey ideas. By adjusting the contrast of light and shadow in the composition, the contrast and
opposition of the surface picture can be very clear
Observation
During the implementation of the project, I observed that there is a subtle tension and fit between traditional religious themes and modern design elements. Traditional works focus on history and sacredness, while modern design emphasizes emotional transmission and visual impact. By observing the interaction between the two in composition, color and symbols, I learned how to respect the spirit of the original work while giving the work new vitality through detail processing.
Findings
Through this stage of exploration, I found that I have significantly improved in visual expression and creative thinking. More importantly, I realized that design is not only a reproduction of form and content, but also a transmission of emotions and ideas. At the same time, I also realized the importance of cross-border integration-combining traditional culture with contemporary aesthetics can open up a new way of expression and inject richer connotations into the work.
