Figure1.2: Artwork of Interest《 The Last Supper

Author:
Leonardo da Vinci
Year:1495-1458
Size:460 cm × 880 cm(181 in × 346 in)

Observe

The Last Supper depicts the scene in the New Testament where Jesus eats the last meal with the twelve disciples, and tells the key moment when Jesus predicts that he will be betrayed. In the picture, Jesus is located in the center, forming a stable triangular structure, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The meeting point of the perspective line is the head of Jesus, emphasizing that he is the visual core of the painting. The light effect accentuates the image of Jesus while placing Judas in shadow, symbolizing the contrast between good and evil.

Analyze

Perspective method

The vanishing point of the entire painting is located on the head of Jesus, where all the perspective lines (such as the beams of the walls and ceiling) converge, making Jesus the visual focus. The use of perspective enhances the depth of the picture, making it look like a real space rather than a mere fresco.

Golden ratio and composition

The body of Jesus forms a stable equilateral triangle, symbolizing the divine and eternal. The twelve disciples are divided into four groups of three to give the picture a sense of rhythm and structure. The layout of the entire painting follows the golden ratio, which makes the visual effect more harmonious.

Compare

Jesus' head is framed by the light from behind the window, like a holy light, highlighting his divine image. Judas is hidden in the shadows, symbolizing his betrayal. The faces of the other disciples are bathed in light, creating a stark contrast between good and evil.

Interpretation

The Last Supper is not only a depiction of a religious scene, but also a work full of emotional tension. In terms of character dynamics, each disciple's posture, gesture, and expression are different, showing their shock, confusion, and grief at Jesus' prophecy. (Symbolism) Jesus sits firmly in the center, symbolizing his authority as Savior, while Judas bends his head away from the crowd, holding a purse full of silver coins, suggesting his betrayal. (Religion and Humanity) The picture not only shows the sacredness, but also highlights the human emotion and drama, so that the viewer can feel the conflict between faith and humanity.

Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

Application of basic design principles: I learned how to use basic design principles such as contrast, balance, hierarchy, alignment and repetition to transform abstract information into intuitive and powerful visual expressions. This not only helps me build a clear visual structure but also improves the efficiency of information transmission.
Communication ability of visual language: By analyzing visual elements such as color, typography and composition, I understand that design is not only about beauty, but more importantly, how to convey emotions and stories through visual language to establish an emotional connection with the audience.
Creative thinking and critical thinking: The case analysis and practical exercises in the module have taught me to examine design works from different angles, constantly reflect and improve. This process has cultivated my ability to be both innovative and detail-oriented when facing design challenges.

What did I enjoy the most?

Freedom and expression of creation: What I like most is the process of conveying emotions and meanings through color, composition and symbols in design. Every design element can tell a story like a language, and this infinite creative possibility makes me passionate.
Visualizing complex information: Being able to present complex concepts or information in a concise and powerful way through design, so that the audience can understand it at a glance, this art of "simplifying complexity" makes me feel deeply satisfied.

What did I not enjoy the most?

Information overload and confusion: When there are too many elements in the design and lack of unified visual logic, information confusion and visual fatigue will occur. This lack of order makes me feel that the effect is greatly reduced, and it also goes against the original intention of design communication.
Blind pursuit of form over content: I don’t like the kind of design that pays too much attention to appearance and ignores the actual information transmission and emotional resonance. The beauty without connotation often makes people feel flashy and empty.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

Aesthetics and creative potential: In constant practice and reflection, I found that I have a keen sense of color, layout and visual details. This is not only a manifestation of aesthetics, but also a way for me to express myself and tell stories.
Self-reflection and learning attitude: I realize that I still have room for improvement in design logic and structural thinking, but at the same time I also see my determination to dare to try and make breakthroughs. The study of the module made me realize more clearly that design requires both sensibility and rationality, and both are indispensable.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

Skills and methods: From the initial casual attempts to the current systematic mastery of design principles, I have significantly improved my visual expression and composition abilities.
Aesthetics and thinking: Through continuous contact with excellent works and cases, my aesthetic level and creative thinking have made great progress, and I can grasp the core elements of design more quickly. Unchanged aspects:
Pursuit and passion for beauty: No matter when, my love for design and sensitivity to beauty have never changed. This persistence in art and expression has always been my driving force for continuous progress.

What are my aspirations?

Continuous breakthrough and practice:
My wish is to apply what I have learned to actual projects, constantly explore and break through the boundaries of visual communication and create works that are both artistic and practical.
Influence and resonance:
I hope to convey warm and profound stories and emotions through design in the future, influence more people, and continue to learn and grow in the process, and eventually become a designer who is both technically proficient and creative.
